– Exceptional – Possibly Mitchums' Best! It's certainly one of his most vulnerable and unique characters. There are some different and very good nuances to his character and performance in this film as a painter, a man of strong virtue, and as a man wrought with uncontrollable love– a love for a woman but for all the shadows he might have been able to see. Alas, here anyway, it is always too late, is it not?
– The story is a spectacular tapestry of one man to the next reflecting on his relations with Nancy and his ruin, and of course, no one takes heed. Even the last man, two beyond Mitchums' departure, fails to give the audience a sure sign he's learned his lesson. It's a fabulous film, sophisticated, suspenseful, compelling and unforgettable...
